THE CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

07.03.08.01                                                           There are records of there having been a chapel in Newton in 1535 and also in 1616 but by 1649 it was reported demolished. The lack of a church building meant that services, Sunday Schools and Mother's Meetings were held in a room in a private house. However, for reasons unknown, this arrangement was suddenly ended in 1900. The Rev. C.P. Shepherd immediately started an appeal to raise funds for a "Mission Room" in Newton. John R Pratt who lived in Liverpool offered a site for the building and plans were prepared. The new building was estimated to cost £246. Bazaars, sales of work, rummage sales, afternoon teas and garden parties were held and within a year not only had the money been raised but the Mission Room was built. Following further fund raising to pay for chairs and other fittings the Newton Mission Room was formally opened on October 31st 1901.

Just 8 years later, in 1910, a chancel was added to the Mission Room. An altar and font were installed and Canon Baillie performed an Act of Dedication. The Mission Room had become the Church of the Good Shepherd.
